Termidor Residual Termiticide and Insecticide TERMIDOR BASF

Description

How does Termidor work?

Termidor uses non-repellent technology and BASF’s patented Transfer Effect™ for long-lasting control of pests in households and other structures. Here’s how it works.

Non-repellent technology

Unlike repellent insecticides that can be easily identified by pests, Termidor is undetectable. Termites and other insects continue to forage and interact normally, picking up a lethal dose of fipronil as they move through treated soil or surfaces.

The Transfer Effect™

The Transfer Effect™ ensures that once contaminated, termites spread the active ingredient through contact, grooming, and food-sharing. This effect then moves through the colony, reaching termites that never encounter the treated zone directly. This is why Termidor consistently delivers complete colony eradication, not just temporary suppression.

Long-lasting residual performance

Termidor offers long-lasting residual performance once applied according to label directions.

This period is a minimum of 8 years in the soil and up to 3 months on surfaces for residual ant control – making surface application ideal for managing seasonal pest pressure in spring and summer when populations are high.

Where can Termidor be used?

Termidor Residual Termiticide & Insecticide is suitable for use in domestic, commercial, and industrial structures, including:

  • Homes, sheds, garages, and outbuildings
  • Schools, hospitals, offices, and commercial facilities
  • Perimeter treatments around slabs, foundations, and footings
  • External surfaces where ant and spider activity is present

What Termidor controls

Termidor provides targeted control of:

  • Termites in the following contexts:
    • Subterranean termites attacking or foraging around built structures
    • Pre-construction and post-construction soil treatments
  • Crawling and nuisance pests
    • Ants (including Argentine ants and household ant species)
    • Domestic cockroaches
    • Web-spinning spiders and daddy-long-legs
    • Earwigs
    • Millipedes and pill bugs
    • House crickets
    • Houseflies (surface spraying only)

Frequently asked questions

Can Termidor be used to control ants?

Absolutely. Termidor Residual Termiticide & Insecticide is one of the most effective products for controlling persistent household ant species, thanks to its Transfer Effect™.

Does Termidor repel termites?

No – Termidor is non-repellent, meaning termites do not detect or avoid it. Instead, termites exist as normal while they are exposed to the active ingredient, fipronil. This is essential for achieving full colony elimination.

Is Termidor better than repellent termiticides?

In most cases, yes. Repellent products only keep termites away temporarily, while Termidor uses non-repellant chemistry to ensure contact, transfer throughout the colony, and finally, complete eradication.

What are some alternatives to Termidor?

Comparable fipronil-based termiticides include TermiForce 100SC, Surefire Termiticide, and Warden 100SC.

Features & Benefits

Designed to deliver consistent, long-term performance in Australian conditions, Termidor Residual Termiticide & Insecticide offers a range of benefits for professional pest management, including:

  • Trusted active ingredient: Termidor is formulated with fipronil @ 100 g/L, a highly effective and widely trusted active ingredient for termite and structural pest control.

It’s hard to give a review on a product with an active life expectancy of 6 years when it has only been applied 4 weeks ago. My expectations are, if it is applied to manufactures specifications and pest management companies recommendations I am confident it will be a good outcome. Purchasing the RE Termidore and diy has saved me approximately $3000.00. Which I used towards my house and contents premium. HE Termidor is a superior product but can not be purchased without a poisons certificate.

Love this product. I had a massive funnel ant invasion on several acres of my property. I systematically went about spraying the immediate area and it’s worked a treat. They are gone and haven’t come back yet, it’s been about a month since I first used it.

Termidor Residual Termiticide and Insecticide can be used for treating soil around structures, including retaining walls. It can also be used to treat infested timber poles, applied around timber house stumps, and applied to wall cavities, but in all of these applications, the methods of application do not include surface spraying. The label doesn't specifically mention treating treated pine sleepers. Given this, we can't make a recommendation, and you may wish to discuss the best approach with a certified best controller.
For reapplication, Termidor provides long-lasting protection, typically up to 8 years when applied as a soil treatment. Regular inspections are recommended to determine the need for retreatment.

To treat wooden house stumps with Termidor Residual Termiticide and Insecticide, you need to create a continuous chemical soil barrier around each stump, following Australian Standards. The preferred method per the label is trenching. Dig a trench at least 150 mm wide around each stump, ensuring it reaches at least 50 mm below the top of the footing. Mix Termidor at a rate of 600 mL per 100 litres of water. Apply at least 100 litres of this diluted mix per cubic metre of soil, treating the trench and the soil as you backfill it. For injecting the centre of the stumps (which the label details primarily for treating active nests), drill holes angled downwards and immediately fill them with the same diluted Termidor mix. The label doesn't specify a preventative volume but says to "flood" nests; ensure the core is saturated and seal the holes afterwards. For further detailed information on the use of Termidor, please refer to the label, which can be found under 'SDS and Technical' on the product page.

Termidor Residual Termiticide and Insecticide is registered to control subterranean termite nests in poles or trees by drilling holes into the area of the tree affected and injecting diluted Termidor. Termidor Residual Termiticide and Insecticide can be used both as a preventative measure and as part of a treatment plan for existing infestations. For existing damage, it's best to consult a licensed pest control operator to ensure effective application and management. Please ensure you read the SDS and Label before purchase and use to confirm suitability for your situation & follow all manufacturers' guidelines. These are available under 'SDS and Technical' on the product page on our website.

Termidor would still be effective as it will attract foraging termites; even when a single termite comes into contact with Termidor, it will unknowingly transfer it back to the colony on its body, including every termite it contacts on the way, thus infecting termites that have not even been near the Termidor treated zone. It can be applied in multiple ways, including spot application to existing nests and, as you mentioned, around your existing structure. It should be noted, however, that the label states that licensed pest control applicators must make post-construction applications to zones under and around existing buildings and structures. As you have stated, your house has an existing population of termites. Termidor Residual Termiticide and Insecticide should be part of a termite eradication and prevention plan in consultation with a licensed pest control applicator. Please ensure you read the SDS and Label prior to purchase and use them to confirm suitability for your situation. These are available under 'SDS and Technical' on the product page on our website.

The label for Termidor Residual Termiticide and Insecticide advises,"'When applying a vertical treated zone underneath concrete, a soil rod with a 3 or 4-way multidirectional tip should be used. The rod should be rotated during application (90° for a 4-way tip and 120° for a 3-way tip). The tip should be inserted down as close to the footing as possible to ensure a complete vertical treated zone. Ensure that the chemical is applied during the insertion and withdrawal of the rod. As the uneven distribution of termiticide is likely when applied by this method under concrete, the application volume should be increased to 200 L spray solution per cubic metre of soil. Rod spacing should not exceed 200 mm, and application volume should be adjusted depending on soil type (refer to the table on the label) and the depth of the footing. Assuming a 300 mm depth to the top of the footing and 200 mm spaced holes, 2 L of prepared spray is to be applied per hole. Any variation of dimensions needs to be re-calculated on the basis of applying 200 L of prepared spray per cubic metre of soil. Please note that the label does state that post-construction applications under and around existing buildings and structures can be applied by a licensed pest control operator only. We do recommend you read the label & SDS available on our website before purchasing and/or application for detailed information relating to your situation.

Termites cannot detect Termidor Insecticide and will not avoid the treated area.  As a result, termites continue to forage through the soil until they encounter Termidor and pick up a lethal dose. When a single termite comes into contact with Termidor, it will unknowingly transfer it back to the colony on its body, including every termite it contacts on the way, thus infecting termites that have not even been near the Termidor-treated zone.

Termidor Residual Termiticide and Insecticide is known for its effectiveness in controlling termites and other insect pests. However, it is important to note that Termidor is typically designed for application in soil or targeted areas where termites are likely to enter a structure. It may not be the most appropriate method when applying Termidor on top of a concrete slab. Termidor is primarily intended for creating a treated zone in the soil around a structure to prevent termites from gaining access. Applying it directly on top of a concrete slab may not provide the same level of protection or effectiveness. Other termite prevention and control strategies may be more suitable for concrete slabs, such as implementing physical barriers during construction, using pre-construction soil treatments, or employing alternative methods recommended by termite control professionals (i.e. Rodding). These methods are often designed to address the specific challenges associated with termites and concrete slabs.

Termidor Residual Termiticide And Insecticide 'directions for use' does not indicate if it is a non-staining or damaging product. It is registered for safe use around external areas and surrounds of domestic, commercial, public and industrial buildings and structures. It is a suspension concentrate formulation that is diluted with water. It does not contain harsh solvents etc. If you are concerned about damage to structures, the best practice would be to conduct a trial by spraying in an inconspicuous area and allowing it to dry. Termidor Residual Termiticide and Insecticide is a contact insecticide that can be applied in many situations.  To be effective, a termite must come into contact with the Termidor.  It will unknowingly transfer it back to the colony on its body, including every termite it contacts on the way, thus infecting termites that have not even been near the Termidor-treated zone.  If you believe termites are active behind the bricks and are confident that you can apply the insecticide where they are active, then there isn't any reason why you can't use the Termidor in those areas.  Remember that you may not be covering the track they are using, so no contact will be made.

You may need to include other control methods such as Trelona Termite Baits that will attract the termites in your control strategy.

Termidor Residual Termiticide and Insecticide has detailed directions for use that you must consult thoroughly before application.  These are available on the Specialist Sales website for each product in the 'Technical & SDS' tab.

For 'Vertical Treated Zones', the trench needs to be a minimum of 150 mm wide and continue to at least 50 mm below the top of the footing. Assuming a 150 mm wide trench with a 300  m distance to the top of the footing, this would equate to a 150 mm x 350 mm trench in which you would apply 5.25 L of prepared spray per lineal metre of the trench.

The active ingredient in Termidor is Fipronil, which is also used in many other products, including spot-on flea treatments for pets.  In some US studies, fipronil was found to be highly toxic to some birds but practically non-toxic to ducks. Fipronil was also highly toxic to honey bees but not toxic to earthworms.  Before spraying Termidor Residual Termiticide and Insecticide, remove animals and pets from the areas to be treated. Cover or remove any exposed food and water containers.

When a single termite comes into contact with Termidor, it will unknowingly transfer it back to the colony on its body, including every termite it contacts on the way, thus infecting termites that have not even been near the Termidor treated zone.  This is the “Transfer Effect” and a key reason why no other termiticide performs as well as Termidor.  Total control is ensured if the affected termites pass the powerful active ingredient fipronil throughout the colony.

Tips For Use

General Pest Control:

  • Termidor will control ants, domestic cockroaches, web-spinning spiders and houseflies by direct contact and residual activity on treated surfaces.
  • When applied as a surface spray as directed, Termidor will give up to 3 months control of ants and is best applied as pest activity increases in early spring.
  • A follow-up application during summer may be required.
  • Do not apply more than 2 residual applications per year.
  • Termidor will control earwigs, daddy-long-legs spiders, millipedes, pillbugs and house crickets by direct contact (spot treatment) only.

Termite Control:

  • Chemical treatment for termite control around existing buildings should be considered to be part of an integrated approach to reduce the risk of termite attack and should be conducted by Licensed Pest Control Operators.
  • The steps below best describe the procedure for optimum termite management:
The building owner should try to minimise water entering under and around the building and improve drainage to reduce moisture accumulating in these areas.
  • Ventilation of sub-floor areas should also be optimised to reduce moisture accumulation.
  • The area under the floor should be kept free from debris-timber such as off-cuts of wood or firewood. Treat with a residual chemical zone treatment such as Termidor in compliance with AS3660.2.
  • Regular inspections should be carried out (at least annually as recommended by AS3660 Series).
  • If any additional subsequent building or landscaping work causes disruption to the chemical soil treated zone it must be restored to maintain protection.

Mixing:

  • Half fill the spray tank with water then add the required quantity of Termidor.
  • Stir then top up the spray tank to the required volume.
  • The use of this product in a tank mix with other insecticides is not recommended as the behaviour and efficacy of the product may be affected.
  • Ensure equipment is free of leaks and clean from residues of other chemicals before mixing.

Restraints:

  • Avoid runoff. Do not apply to excessively wet soils, immediately after or during heavy rain.
  • Do not apply at less than label rates.
  • Do not apply to internal surfaces.

Precautions:

  • Residents and pets should not be allowed in a room being treated.
  • Any spills should be cleaned up before leaving the room (refer to the SDS).
  • Ensure all heating/air conditioning ducts, air vents, plumbing pipes, sewer lines, floor drains, heating pipes and electrical lines/conduits are known and identified before commencing any application of termiticide.
  • Do not puncture or contaminate any of these.
  • Avoid application around edible plants.

Re-Entry Period:

  • Do not re-enter treated areas until spray has dried.

Protections:

  • Protection Of Wildlife, Fish, Crustaceans And Environment.
    • Highly toxic to fish and aquatic organisms.
    • Do not apply to areas where surface water is present.
    • Rinse waters and run-off from treated areas must be prevented from entering drains or waterways.
    • Do not apply if heavy rains are expected to occur within 48 hours of application.
    • Do not contaminate streams, rivers or waterways with the chemical or used containers.
  • Dangerous to bees.
  • Protection Of Pets And Livestock
    • Before spraying remove animals and pets from the areas to be treated.
    • Cover or remove any open food and water containers.
    • Cover or remove (as applicable) fish ponds, aquariums etc before spraying.

Period Of Protection:

  • Data currently available indicates that this product, when applied as a soil treatment around or under a building or structure in accordance with this label, will be effective against subterranean termites for a minimum period of eight years.
  • Delayed mortality effects may be observed meaning termites may live and continue to be active several weeks after penetrating the treated zone.
To re-establish the treated zone after the 8 year Period of Protection, re-application at full rates is required.
  • The actual protection period will also be affected by factors such as termite pressure, climatic and soil conditions and subsequent soil disturbance.

Re-Inspection:

  • As with all chemical termiticides, regular inspections (at least annually) by a competent Licensed Pest Control Operator is recommended as bridging and breaching of treated zones can occur.
  • The need for retreatment should be determined as a result of these inspections.

Storage:

  • Store in the closed, original container in a cool, well-ventilated area.
  • Do not store for prolonged periods in direct sunlight.

Safety Directions:

  • Will irritate the eyes and skin.
  • Repeated exposure may cause allergic disorders.
  • Avoid contact with eyes and skin.
  • Wash hands after use.
  • When opening the container, preparing spray and using the prepared spray, wear chemical resistant clothing buttoned to the neck and wrist and a washable hat, half-facepiece respirator with combined dust and gas cartridge and elbow-length PVC or nitrile gloves.
  • After each day’s use, wash gloves, contaminated clothing and respirator and if rubber wash with detergent and warm water.

First Aid:

  • If poisoning occurs contact a doctor or Poisons Information Centre. Phone Australia 131 126.
  • For further information, refer to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS).
